A satisfied customer!

"Adrian, Thankyou soooo much for all you have done, your teaching methods and patience are incredible, you are so devoted to what you do; you have restored my faith in Driving Instructors. Passing my test means so so much to me and my family. And I know now I have a licence, I will never disrespect it. I owe it all to you. You have built my confidence back up and have given me the will to do it. I couldn't recommend you highly enough. Take good care, Thanks Claire"

The Driving Test and other information

The DSA regularly send out updates on the driving test and theory test.  The latest information from the DSA is below, together with other related topics about the driving test.

Test requirements

The DSA has a syllabus for the Driving Test.  It is "National standard for driving cars (category B)".  It sets out what is expected for anyone who is learning to drive.

Just click on the link to the website.

Practical test

The Theory Test is based on your knowledge of the Highway Code, road signs, attitude, environmental issues, car insurance etc. You can learn all this from the Highway Code, Driving The Essential Skills and Know Your Traffic Signs. Those three books can be purchased from any book retailer. Also, you can buy a DVD with all information about theory revision plus the hazard perception test.

The practical Driving Test is about safety, driving within the law, consideration to others and driving in an economical and environmentally friendly way. The first point is (of course) the most important part of the assessment by the examiner. They want you to drive in such a way that you are at the correct speed, gear and position for the actual or potential hazard(s) ahead and not leaving it to luck and your ability to suddenly brake.

Driving within the law is obvious, but you should also take note of the advice in the Highway Code as well. Driving in an economical way also overlaps with Eco driving. If you accelerate harshly or unnecessarily more fuel is used and also more CO2 is produced.

Again, as in the first point, if you plan ahead you will be at the correct speed, in the appropriate gear and best position in the road for all situations. On the day of the test, the examiner will ask you to sign a declaration of residency and that the vehicle used for the test is insured. Then you will have to read a registration plate from a distance of between 20 and 20.5 metres, answer 2 questions based on daily/weekly vehicle checks, have the test briefly explained and the test then starts.

Driving test myths

1. Move your head to make sure that the examiner can see that you are checking your mirrors.

This is not necessary as the examiner is highly trained to check that you have done the appropriate observation.  Also, the head movement is not enough if you have not acted on what is seen in the mirror!

2. You must use the "pull push" method and not cross your arms when steering otherwise you will fail.

As long as you maintain control over the vehicle and the crossing of your arms does not compromise the safety of the drive, it is acceptable.  (although in an advanced test you must use the "pull push" method)

3.  Hitting the kerb will automatically fail you.

Only if you hit the kerb hard are you risking a failure.  Even hitting the kerb at 30 mph (ever so slightly) would give you only a driving fault.

4.  There is a quota in how many passes that the DSA can give out.

If that is the case, then why learn to drive from a professional at all and I think that the national Papers would give headline  news to the "quota" system

Curfew Insurance

The cost of car insurance for learner drivers can be expensive.  It can depend on the car you will be driving, where you live or a figure that seems to be taken out of thin air!

The premium (what you pay per year for the insurance cover), can be reduced if you vary the excess (that is the part of any claim that you make that you have to pay).   Also, if you have a reduced cover (third party) your premium might be lower.

It might be tempting to add a newly qualified driver to an insurance policy (a named driver) rather than having them as the main driver which would reduce the premium.  If the named driver uses the car more than the main driver (or the policy holder), then they are driving illegally.  This is called Fronting.  It is all about statistics.  If the car is mainly being used by an experienced driver then the risk of a claim is reduced.  Hence the lower premum.  Any inaccurate information concerning the policy, could invalidate the insurance and therefore the car will be used without insurance!
It just takes a routine enquiry from the Police to work out if the car is insured or not.

There is an insurance company that is almost 50% cheaper than anyone else.  They have worked out that most claims come from drivers using the car between 11 pm and 5am.  So, as long as you do not drive at those times , they will give much lower insurance.

Waiting time for tests

Practical Test

The earliest practical test should be in six weeks time, but for some reason the DSA has not achieved that target for over a year.  It is now closer to 10 weeks.  The wait varies according to demand and availabilty of examiners.

Pupils sometimes cancel their test (for whatever reason) and an earlier slot is then available for someone else.  But, to get an earlier date, you would have to be checking online as often as possible.

If a pupil does get an earlier test, they must check with their Driving Instructor first to ensure that they can use the car etc.

Theory Test

The waiting time for a theory test is apptoximately 2 weeks

3 B02 Show

Show me / explain how you would check that the

power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

If the steering becomes heavy the system may not

be working properly. Before starting a journey two

simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on

the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is

started, should result in a slight but noticeable

movement as the system begins to operate.

Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after

moving off will give an immediate indication that thepower assistance is functioning.

3 B12 Tell

Tell me where you would find the information for

the recommended tyre pressures for this car and

how tyre pressures should be checked.

Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure

gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are

cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit

valve caps.
